Rest, Recharge & Reconnect - Prioritizing Wellness Over Winter Break
Mrs. de Hoog & Ms. Holland

As winter break approaches, our school community looks forward to a well-deserved pause - a chance to step back from busy routines, celebrate the season, and create space for renewal. At Southridge, we value the whole child, and that means encouraging students and families to embrace wellness in all its forms.

The upcoming break offers a unique opportunity to slow down, reflect, and strengthen habits that support emotional, physical, and social well-being. Here are a few gentle reminders and ideas to help make the most of the break:

1. Make Time for Genuine Rest

After an active fall filled with classes, extracurriculars, and community events, students benefit greatly from uninterrupted rest. Encourage children to sleep in when possible, take mindful breaks from screens, and enjoy quiet moments - whether curled up with a book (see our Winter Reading Guides), drawing, or simply relaxing.

2. Limit Screen Time with Intention

While screens can be entertaining and convenient during the break, setting healthy boundaries supports overall wellness. Reducing screen time helps protect sleep routines, supports attention and emotional regulation, and creates more space for creativity, movement, and meaningful connection.

3. Stay Active in Joyful Ways

Wellness doesn’t have to mean rigorous exercise. It can be a family walk after dinner, building a snowman, dancing in the living room, or doing some chores together. Movement supports not only physical health but also mood and mental clarity.

4. Cultivate Connection

The holidays can be a wonderful time to reconnect with loved ones, but they can also feel hectic. Intentionally carving out calm, unstructured time (e.g. game nights, shared meals, or casual conversations) helps strengthen relationships and supports children’s overall sense of belonging.

5. Explore Creativity

Winter break is the perfect backdrop for creative exploration: cooking a new recipe, crafting handmade gifts, or starting a personal project. These playful experiences spark curiosity and confidence.

6. Step Outdoors

Even on chilly/wet days, a few minutes of fresh air can make a big difference. Nature has a calming effect and encourages grounding, perspective, and wonder - especially for growing minds.

7. Prepare for a Positive Return

As break winds down, gently easing back into routines - adjusting bedtimes, organizing materials, revisiting goals - can help students feel ready and confident to return to school refreshed and energized.

We hope that this winter break gives every family the chance to rest deeply, laugh often, and enjoy moments of connection. We look forward to welcoming our students back with renewed energy and excitement for the remainder of the school year.
