Stepping Into Sustainability

For the last few years, Southridge has been on a green mission! Three years ago, we joined Eco-Schools – one of the world’s largest programs dedicated to sustainability in education. EcoSchools offers a certification program for elementary through secondary schools, to incentivize, track, and reward environmental actions that reduce energy and waste, raise awareness, and incorporate environmental learning into curriculum. We’re proud to say that every year since we became members of EcoSchools, we’ve hit the platinum level – the top achievement in this global program!

But what does achieving platinum level look like in practice? It looks like waste-free lunch days in our Junior School, Earth Hour events where lights and devices are switched off, and community clean-ups that involve students from all grades. Students, staff, and families alike have contributed to initiatives like diverting textile waste, recycling old electronics, and participating in Bike to Work Week. Even our Café has embraced the change, offering eco-friendly, meatless meal days. The message is clear: sustainability is not just something we talk about at Southridge – it’s woven into the fabric of daily school life.

The Green Boots Initiative

Over the years, as we’ve increased our emphasis on promoting environmentalism and sustainability, a fresh idea emerged – one that puts a little friendly competition into going green. Last year, Southridge’s Environmental Stewardship Committee, made up of Junior and Senior School students and staff, decided to integrate these efforts into our school’s house point system. Enter the Green Boots award, a new addition to our house competitions. It’s simple: the house that racks up the most “green points” through their sustainable actions takes home the coveted Green Boots award at the end of the school year.

“The idea is to foster a culture of environmental awareness among students, making sustainability a fun and engaging experience,” says Darren Jones, Assistant Head of School – Community Engagement. “By participating in various eco-friendly activities, students can earn green points for their respective school houses, promoting teamwork and friendly competition. Whether it’s recycling paper and batteries or being the house that uses the least amount of paper printing at school, every action counts toward making a difference – and now, it can also help you win Southridge’s Green Boots.”

But, don’t let the lighthearted competition fool you; this initiative is about more than just points and prizes. It’s about taking real steps toward a more sustainable future. By building these habits early, Southridge hopes to cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious citizens who understand that every small action can make a big impact.
