Student Reflections - Global Learning in Japan

Something that surprised you
The cleanliness of the streets and ryokans really stood out. I was also surprised by how tipping isn’t accepted in restaurants—it’s considered standard to provide excellent service without expecting extra.

A cultural insight that left an impression
“Staying in traditional Japanese homes and seeing how everything was kept so immaculate gave me a strong sense of the pride people take in their surroundings and hospitality.”

Most fun activity
Our free time was the best. We got to explore local shops, pick our own lunch spots, and just take in the vibrant street scenes - so many flashy signs, unique vending machines, and fun little items that you can buy everywhere.”

Most meaningful moment
What I remember most isn’t just the sights - it’s the people. I got so much closer to friends on this trip. Sharing such an incredible international experience with them made everything more memorable.

Biggest challenge
The rain! I wasn’t prepared during a walking tour and my entire bag got soaked. Still, the temples were beautiful and totally worth it. After that, I think 80% of us ran to convenience stores to buy umbrellas - then it never rained again!

Advice to other students
Definitely go on a school trip if you can, especially with friends, and while you’re in Grade 8-10 when you have more time to enjoy it all. You’ll make hilarious memories, see amazing sights, and if you love photography bring a real camera to capture the memories!

Something that surprised you
I expected Japan to be super high-tech, but daily life was more traditional than I thought. For example, how often coins are used really surprised me.

A cultural insight that stood out
I knew Japan had a reputation for politeness, but what I noticed was a quiet kind of kindness that’s overshadowed by a widespread anti-tourism sentiment – like certain restaurants that wouldn’t serve foreigners. This demonstrates how Japan’s tourism boom has grown faster than it can reconcile economic gains with local acceptance.

Most fun activity
Staying at a hotel near Lake Kawaguchi by Mt. Fuji. We spent the evening walking along the beach, taking photos, and just hanging out. It was peaceful and beautiful.

Most meaningful moment
It wasn’t a single moment, but this trip gave me the opportunity to get to know some friends better, which I’m grateful for.

Biggest challenge
Nothing about the trip felt especially challenging.

Advice to other students
School trips can be amazing if you go with close friends and choose a destination where you’ll enjoy the food and culture. Expect early mornings, long days, and lots of learning. It’s definitely worth it - but you have to make the experience your own.
