Southridge Hosts ISAA Girls Soccer Championships: Win-Win-Win!

ISA Girls Soccer Senior Team

Southridge hosted 18 teams from across Greater Vancouver and Vancouver Island this past Thursday and Friday (April 19th and 20th). The event was actually two separate tournaments as the Junior division with Grade 8 - 10 students played primarily at South Surrey Athletic Park, while the Senior division games were played at the Southridge campus. Although there are always glitches in events of this nature, Mr. Hinson, Mr. Higgins, Ms. Alhayek, Mr. Sterelyukhin and Brandt Muncey-Buckley all played a big role in keeping the tournament on-track.

Don't be too misled by this article's title. Of course, we all like to win, but in this case the triumphs of the Southridge community go far beyond on-field performances. (Although there were some great ones as the players more than held up their end of the bargain.)

The quote, "It's about how you finish and not how you start" fittingly describes our Junior Girls' team. After a few early disappointing games, the Junior Girls' showed their true grit and ability with a thrilling come-back 5-4 win over Crofton House. There were so many goals, lead changes, and end-to-end action that some people weren't even sure of the score at the final whistle! With no healthy substitutes left by the end of the match, it was a true team effort.

The Senior Girls' team continued their excellent play, winning all four tournament games on route to the Championship Trophy. With a good-sized crowd watching, the Storm opened the scoring with a great header and never looked back, beating York House 2-0 to end the tournament. Including league play, the girls actually played six games over the four days including the ISAA's, winning all six!

ISA Soccer Tournament Concession StandAnother group of people scored the final victory of the event. A fantastic group of parents from both Southridge teams ran a great concession, benefiting the Surrey Urban Mission. Ms. Sandeep Bhatha (Suhaana's mom) was the organizer. I would like to finish with a quote from her:

"Congrats to the senior girls on winning the tournament (!) and to the junior girls for playing with heart and ending the day 2 with a hard-fought victory!

Thank you, parents, for braving the chilly breeze and volunteering and contributing in so many ways to the charity fundraiser. I've tallied up the funds and drumroll, please...we raised just over $1400!!"
