This service is offered as an extended day option to participants of our weekly camps. Children will have the choice of playing games in the gym, or watching a movie to relax after a busy day. Parents are required to pick up their child by 5:00 pm. This is a per week commitment. 


UNDER THE SEA

Go under the sea and learn all about our oceans and sea creatures in this fun, active, hands-on, educational camp. We will learn about mermaids, fish, whales, sharks, and more through games, stories, and fun activities. Campers will learn new facts about the sea and create many different ocean themed art projects like foil fish, paper sailboats, and jelly fish sun catchers. Of course, no Under the Sea week would be complete without some wet, wild, and wacky water play outside.


DISCOVER THE POWER OF PEN AND PERFORMANCE

With the talented and world-renowned author and illustrator, Eric Carle, as our guide, this camp will explore writing, visual arts, and dramatic performance, which will inspire children to sharpen their writing and reading skills by experiencing what it is like to be an author. Children will extend their learning through crafts, cooking, puppets, and other hands-on activities. They will also discover the power of their voice through dramatic games which promote self-esteem, risk-taking and choral speech, as well as work together to create Eric Carle inspired artworks.     


DISCOVER PLANET EARTH

Discover the incredible way our world works as an alien guest scientist from Planet X. On a one week journey to Earth, you will discover our planet’s amazing features through exciting hands-on experiments. Children will build a mini-volcano and make it erupt, grow crystals, and see how icicles are made. They will also build a lava lamp, watch a battle between oil and water, and make “oobleck” – a cool substance that has both solid and liquid properties!

SPACE IS THE PLACE

Buckle in and blast off with the Southridge Space program! Build your own spacecraft and use it to defy gravity. Create your very own solar system, make a 3D mobile of the galaxy, sculpt alien life forms, and stretch your imagination by inventing your very own “Space Race” board game. Explore the fascinating world of outer space through these and many more fun, hands-on activities. This camp is brimming with exploration, discovery, and cross-curricular studies!

JUNIOR ART CAMP - Group A

Move over, Van Gogh! Junior Art Camp at Southridge is where campers will discover, experiment with, and express their artistic talents in new ways. Participants will enjoy working with all kinds of art materials including clay, papier-mâché, pastels, paints, found objects, food colouring, and more. On the final day, campers will treat parents to a display of their masterpieces. Our focus is on self-expression; not on having things “perfect”. Be prepared to get dirty – bring a smock, your imagination, and a sense of humour! All other supplies are included. Note: Due to popular demand, there will be two separate Junior Art Camps (Group A and Group B) running at the same time led by different instructors in separate classrooms. Camp content is the same in both camps.

This camp is all about developing a lifelong passion for sport, recreation and physical activity in a fun and safe environment. Campers will participate in a wide variety of different sports such as soccer, basketball, California kick ball, and capture the flag, as well as play cooperative games and other fun activities. In the afternoons, the players will be exercising their brains with activities that require a little extra brain power to solve! While brain teasers by nature are designed to be fun, the activities encourage logical and lateral thinking, or thinking ‘outside’ the box. Children will work on language, math and visual brain teasers.

In this exciting and fun-filled week, we will explore acting through a variety of creative activities, including improvisation, action-packed theatre sports games, and on-your-feet physical activities. Campers will have the opportunity to use their imagination, creativity, and performance expression throughout the week. We will explore voice and movement as well as work together on a final play, which will be presented on the last day of the week. Campers gain self-confidence through focused drama and team building activities. This camp is perfect for actors of all skill levels, even first-timers. 


HOGWARTS ACADEMY

Come travel to the Land of Enchantment featuring Harry Potter. We will take you on an enchanting journey into a land of wizards, magic, and fun! Experience a house-sorting ceremony followed by fun-filled days where you will learn magic spells using everyday items, and enter a magical dueling tournament. Campers will make a mandrake, create their own wands and capes, create enchanting pieces of art, learn how to play Quidditch, and whip up some mysterious concoctions in the kitchen. Use your imagination to experience a week visiting Hogwarts - where anything can happen!

MINECRAFT ADVENTURE

Come and be an adventurer with us as we bring the virtual world of Minecraft to life! We will explore the video game, get tips and tricks, as well as learn about cooperation, online etiquette, and digital responsibility. Together, we will embark on virtual building and team treasure hunting challenges, and recreate the Minecraft world through creative and physical activities. We will “Minecraft Ourselves”, make Minecraft avatar helmets, build with Minecraft Papercraft, and more! Adventurers will also engage in physical activity by playing Minecraft themed sports and games. NOTE: campers will be responsible for bringing a device with a version of Minecraft on it each day (preferably the Pocket Edition, available on iOS, Android and Windows devices).

DIY MEETS MAKERSPACE

Do it yourself projects will give campers the opportunity to learn new skills, problem solve, exercise their brains, and acquire new knowledge by building, modifying, and repairing things. One of the greatest outcomes of DIY projects has been empowering people regardless of age to feel self-reliant and capable of learning any new skill. Aside from all the benefits, these projects are fun and engaging hands-on experiences! Campers will spend the week working on building, crafting, woodwork, and gardening projects.

Do you like to conduct your own experiments? In this camp, you will experience exhilarating scientific discoveries through hands-on activities. We will find out how molecules move, learn the properties of matter, and observe how strange substances behave. Campers will create colour changing milk, make tornadoes, find out what ‘magic sand’ is, and much more. You will get to design and build rockets and boats, and compete in the ‘Southridge Egg Drop Challenge’! By the end of the week, you will bring home the coolest science tricks to show your friends and family.

Get in touch with your inner warrior and set the world on fire! We all have our own individual power to make a change in the world through our belief in ourselves and our interaction with others. This camp is designed to address the issues of development as a girl and provide young girls with the skills to make positive changes in their life and the lives of those around them. Campers will design their own t-shirts, practice daily yoga, play cooperative games, practice art therapy, and much more! Focus is on confidence building and leadership development to encourage girls to keep their fires burning strong! 


Young Entrepreneurs

Who doesn’t like to be their own boss! Campers will examine bestseller brands and work through concepts and ideas on what drives their popularity (the demand). After discussing a ‘need’ campers will create a modified business plan, design logos, business cards and write elevator pitches - all to drive sales! Campers will explore their creative sides and combine that with real world applications, culminating with a Madison Avenue style boardroom sales presentation of their unique idea. 



STORM FOOTBALL ACADEMY (NON-CONTACT)

Campers can come and make their own highlights of amazing catches and throws at the Storm Football Academy. Athletes will learn through many drills and games, just how to make that perfect throw or catch and take their game to the next level! Campers will even get a chance to test their speed and agility with NFL style events like the 40-yard dash! In addition to playing on the field, we will discuss football strategy in the classroom and play games that promote team building and cooperation. Campers will also have the chance to design their own jerseys and create a playbook to use on the field. Improving skills along with building self-confidence and being a part of a team are all part of the experience!


HANDS-ON ROBOTICS: MINDSTORMS EV3

In this hands-on robotics camp, campers will build their own robot by exploring the principles of mechanics involving motors, wheels, and axles using Lego’s cutting edge Mindstorms EV3 technology. The EV3 system allows for more motors, more sensors, and the ability to control robots from iOS and Android devices for seemingly endless possibilities. We will become familiar with input devices (such as: touch, light, rotation, gyroscopes, and ultrasonic sensors) along with output devices (such as: motors, sound, and lights.) Campers will be engaged in problem-solving tasks by designing and creating their own robots to complete daily challenges, both individually and as part of a group. This camp includes use of a Southridge Lego Mindstorms EV3 kit.

OUTDOOR PHYSICAL FUN

Join us for a week of outdoor physical fun exploring nature’s peaks, valleys, and waterways! Campers will get to connect with nature while improving their physical fitness through hiking, trail walking, and swimming. Destinations include various hikes and lakes around the Lower Mainland, such as: Teapot Hill and Cultus Lake. NOTE: Some of the physical activities are considered intermediate level – campers should have a good base level of fitness in order to participate in this camp. The daily itinerary will be emailed before the first day. This camp requires an Off-site Informed Consent Form to be completed.

NEW DAY, NEW ADVENTURE

In this action-packed camp, we will soak up the summer rays while experiencing a new adventure each day in our beautiful city. Campers will visit Science World, hit the waves at the waterslides, explore Lynn Canyon (including the suspension bridges), and more! On Friday, we will end the week with a day of fun at Playland. young scientists

Campers will put on their scientist hats for a week of experiments, dissections, investigations and competitions as we learn about physics, chemistry and biology in a fun setting. This camp incorporates science magic, microscopes, demonstrations and observations as we discover why things work the way they do and what makes science so interesting. Each day, we will focus on a different science, and at the end of the week, we will get out our trusty microscopes to discover the many micro-organisms that can be found in pond water. On Thursday, we will head off to the UBC Botanical Garden to experience first-hand their food and medicinal gardens as well as their tree top canopy.
